Page 2 of 2 The most likely spot to hear Hebrew is in one of the newer kosher restaurants and bakeries, clustered around the furthest end of the main drag, away from the tube station. I must point out; there is a great variety of kosher joints. My Ami Burger, a fast-food outlet, is something very different to Blooms, one of the most famous kosher restaurants in England. There’s a whole host of lets-make-kosher-eating-trendy places; for sushi, Indian etc, that don’t inspire me but I’m glad they’re there, giving the religious more choice. There are other gold stars on my map of Jewish Golders Green; one is the Jewish cemetery on Hoop Lane (but not near my flat, in case you were worried). Here you’ll find writer Jack Rosenthal, cellist Jacqueline du Pré, and others, and can visit nearby North Western Reform Synagogue if the whole thing makes you philosophical. For Jewish paraphernalia the shop Jerusalem The Golden (the only shop I can think of with ‘The’ as its middle word) is fascinating. This week I walked past it and marvelled a large basket containing many, very curly looking-shofahs in the window. Another more modern funky Judaica shop, Steimatsky's, is the place to go if you need one of those hand shaped Israeli amulet things - it boasts a huge selection. Having lived on and off in Golders Green for over 20 years (that’s almost as long as those wedding cakes have been in the window of a certain local Jewish bakery), my list of the area’s highlights is too long to mention fully. OK, I’ll summarize it on a postage stamp. Why have I bought a flat in NW11? Within ten minutes of my home there are four different places to get bagels. |
