The Diplomatic Seminar for Young Jewish Leaders is a study programme, organised annually by Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for young Jewish men and women of outstanding leadership potential.
The next Seminar will take place from 6 to 16 July 2009 and will be based at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem. It is open to participants aged 21 (post-university) to 36 from Jewish communities around the world. YDS aims to give next-generation leaders the analytical tools and background information needed for a deep understanding of the political and national security challenges facing Israel. Specific sessions with senior Government spokespersons will cover the society, economy and culture of the state. Debates, lectures and workshops will cover diverse political issues from the history and present of the peace process to the discussion of Judaism and democracy in 21st-century Israel. In addition, backstage passes to cultural events and fact-finding day trips around the country will expose participants to the rich fabric of historical and modern Israeli life.
This year, there will also be a special track devoted to challenges facing global Jewry: Jewish continuity and demography, the ongoing battle with anti-Semitism, and the relationship between Israel and the Diaspora. All sessions are in English. Last year, participants came from across Europe, the United States, South America and Russia to share their views and enhance their Participants only need to pay for their flight; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs covers accommodation, food and all land costs for participants within the programme.
