Erev Shavuot: What's On

Erev Shavuot is Tuesday 18th May. It is traditional to take part in study and learning throughout the night of erev Shavuot . This is because the Midrash tells us that the night before the Torah was given, the Israelites went to bed early but they overslept and had to be woken by Moses, so we need to make up for this by staying up until dawn. Here is our pick of the best ways to stay up all night.

West London Synagogue's Tikkun Leyl Shavuot is organised in conjunction with LJS: the Liberal Jewish Synagogue and Tent . Sessions include: future British Ambassador to Israel Matthew Gould, rabbis teaching and creating, music from Mark Greenfield and Drew Salida, theatre from Maya Levy with Troiseaux and much more finishing with Shacharit at 4:45 am. A night of learning will keep you wide awake at Hendon's LSJS: London School of Jewish Studies Tikkun Leyl Shavuot organised by the Alei Tzion Community. LSJS is the centre of modern orthodox Jewish learning in Britain. Eight great teachers have been invited to each choose a text that surprises, inspires and challenges them. On this night they will all share them with you finishing with Shacharit at approximately 3.15 am. Ice cream and fairtrade coffee, tea and herbal drinks will be served through the night. Visit the LSJS website for more details.

In a new event for 2010, the Reform Movement, together with four of its communities will host a Tikkun Leyl Shavuot at the Sternberg Centre in Finchley. Come and join twelve rabbis, one cantor, four synagogues and one Reform Movement as we grapple with the Ten Commandments on the night of the festival of Shavuot. Masorti communities will host Tikkun Leyl Shavuot learning at New London Synagogue in St. John's Wood and in Finchley at New North London Synagogue.
