Masorti Kollel

Jewish learning in London: the Masorti Kollel is now registering students for September 2010. The Masorti Kollel is now registering students for September 2010.

The Masorti Kollel, now in its second year, offers high level study for learners who want to grapple with Jewish texts in their original language. The goal of the Kollel is not to teach about Judaism, but for learners to become independent readers of the tradition.

The Kollel  focuses on Talmud, with additional sessions on other Jewish texts: Bible, midrash, philosophy, Hasidut, the Siddur.  It’s aimed at people with some prior experience of textual learning: as a guideline, participants should be able to translate a simple piece of Hebrew text (Torah or Mishnah) using a dictionary.  It also hoped that more advanced classes will be offered on demand, up to the level of Tosafot and Rishonim.

The Talmud course is taught by Rabbi Chaim Weiner. Additional classes and mini-courses will be taught by Masorti rabbis and top-level guest lecturers. The Kollel will meet on Thursday mornings.

Location: New North London Synagogue, the Manor House, 80 East End Road, Finchley, London N3 2SY.

Cost: £300 for the entire year.
This price is highly subsidised, making up no more than a third of the true teaching costs involved.  Additional scholarships are available for people for whom this cost is an obstacle.  Students who are able to are also invited to make an additional contribution to help us cover costs.
