The monthly Jewish Gay and Lesbian Group Chavurah takes place at a Central London venue on a need to know basis. But don’t worry, if you need to know, you will find out.
Described as service, schmooze, Kiddush and buffet, it’s just that. The service is definitely liberal leaning with a transliterated siddur compiled by the group but apart from breaking out of the circle for some discussion or a bonding activity in the sermon slot, is actually quite traditional with lively singing.
The tone is set by whoever happens to be leading on that particular week. The Chavurah is fortunate in being able to draw on the talents of several gay and lesbian rabbis and rabbinical students which gives it a different flavour each time.
It’s not unusual for people to be engaging with Judaism for the first time after years of alienation and many are searching for a space in which they feel comfortable.
The buffet is pot-luck with everyone contributing a dish and something to drink but you will be asked for a contribution towards the venue hire; a donation of £3 per person is requested and a collection box is passed round after dinner.
There is usually plenty of food and all of it is vegetarian with Friday night pot-luck stalwarts quiche and houmous making regular appearances.
As for the schmooze… Like many events, you never know who will turn up and this is half the fun. Sometimes it’s a bit more lesbian, sometimes a bit more gay. There is a regular core membership, who it’s fair to say are a bit older than your average Jeneration-nik and if there aren’t many other non-regulars in attendance it might feel a bit cliquey but don’t be afraid of introducing yourself and getting stuck in.
